The Driftless Area of SW WI, NE IA & SE MN
the Fish:
the spring creeks of the Driftless Area are rich
in trout, many
streams are naturally reproducing. Brown
and Brook trout are the dominate species.
There are a few streams that have rainbow and
tiger trout. Tiger trout are a naturally
occurring, sterile cross between and a brown and
brook trout. While most of the trout are
in the 7 - 12" range, 20+" browns and 16+" are
regularly caught. The spring creeks are
low gradient, meaning that the water flows
slowly, allowing the trout to get a good look at
your fly. The trout are spooky and should
be approached slowly and with stealth.
This is not an easy fishery but it is a rich and
rewarding one once you get to know it.
Guides:
if this the first time that you will be fishing
the Driftless Area it is recommended that you
hire a guide for the first day or two. If you
are a beginner, a guide will educate and relax
you so that you can enjoy the spring creeks and
natural beauty of the area. If you are an
experienced fly angler, a guide will greatly
speed up your learning curve on these technical
waters. UMFF has a list of guides who specialize
in the Driftless Area.
